Running not only has huge benefits on your physical health and fitness, it also has a positive impact on your mental health and well-being. It releases endorphins and alleviates stress and depression – keeping you relaxed and motivated. Running can also add years to your life and can even keep you sharper as you get older.

But many people struggle to fit running into their lifestyle – safety concerns and the great British weather are the most common reasons that people avoid running outside. Owning your own treadmill allows you to run in the comfort of your own home, no matter the weather. There are many other advantages of treadmill running too:

  • Shock absorption – treadmills usually offer joint-protecting shock reduction; much kinder on your joints than road running.
  • With calorie counters and heart rate monitors you can keep track of your progress whilst being on the move.
  • Treadmills are a great form of exercise if you’re recovering from an injury, enabling you to use handrails whilst walking on a smooth surface.
  • Running machines enable you to customise your exercise routine; with adjustable speeds and inclines there is no limit to your workout.

How to vary your treadmill workout

All treadmills come with a variety of different programmes so that you can keep your training varied and interesting. Many treadmills have interactive features so you can share workouts online, compete with others or take “virtual runs” through famous landscapes.

Here are just a few of our favourite treadmill workout variations:

Hike the Hill

Incline and speed are 2 ways that the treadmill enables you to mix up your workout – for an intense session gradually grow the incline and see how far and fast you can go.

Walk with weights

Combine strength and cardio by using weights whilst you walk. Walk at a quick pace while doing bicep curls, shoulder presses and lateral raises. You can also simply hold the weights while walking normally to sneak in an extra challenge.

Speedy Sprint

If you’ve only got time for a quick workout, why not boost the effectiveness of your workout by moving quicker?! Sprint for 20 seconds, walk for 40 seconds. Repeat 10 times for a quick and effective workout.

TV Challenge

One benefit of running on a treadmill is that you can watch your favourite TV programmes at the same time. Walk during your favourite show and run in the ad breaks – a great way to mix up your workout.
